Coverage was limited, but the snow ample as we lapped Dinosaur three times, getting deep pow on almost every turn. I was surprised by the limited number of ski tourers, as an early season pow day at Hyak usually results in hordes of people.

Tim's son Trevor, hailing from the snowy city of Tucson, Arizona, was ripping it up and we couldn't have asked for a better Christmas present!

The snowboarding itself was pretty excellent, thanks to lots of powdery, soft snow. It was only the third day of the season, so I imagine (although I am no snowboarding expert, let me tell you) the snow must be pretty darn fantastic at its peak. The only downside to the whole thing was the cost. Because roads are few and far between in New Zealand, and public transport even less prevalent, we had to book ourselves on a coach to the resort. And because we were on a worldwide trip and had come from a hot Chinese summer, we didn't have any winter gear whatsoever.

Bali is almost too beautiful to describe with words. The friendly and gracious people of the island practice the Hindu religion, so I was always stepping over exquisite baskets filled with rice and flowers on the sidewalks. One of the Balinese shopkeepers explained to me that these offerings were given three times a day, and she was basically giving back what had been given to her by the Gods. I was intrigued by their spiritualness and read more about in on my travels. During my time there, I also discovered that many of the people of Bali believe that -- “Good spirits reside in the mountains, and the seas are home to demons and ogres.” I guess I was off to see the demons and ogres.

Every year at this time, as we get ready to set off on a camping trip, I can’t help but reminisce about our first Northwest camping adventure.

My husband and I, both Midwesterners, wanted to leave the flat lands. So we looked West. But before we decided where to lay down some roots, we wanted to take a trip to explore both Portland and Seattle.

Since we didn’t really know the area well, I devoured as much info as I could find online. We decided on Dosewallips State Park for the Washington leg of our camping trip. Not really our usual selection, it’s definitely car camping – 100 sites that all accommodate RVs. On the plus side, it had showers – a real treat from our usual selections. The other good thing, it was centrally located. So exploring the Northern and Southern parts of the Olympic Coast was possible.

Jackson Hole is known for its phenomenal mountain activities, breathtaking views of the Tetons, and Yellowstone National Park is just north of where we would be staying. Unfortunately we were only there for the weekend (yes, the 12-hour drive from Portland to Victor, and back, was definitely worth it) but we were going to make the best of it. Luckily the weather forecast included high 70′s and sun!

We took the short drive just across the Mississippi state line to the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. My idea was to get a little change of scenery. This is an 18,000 acre reserve and is one of the largest undisturbed estuarine marsh/pine savanna habitats remaining along the Northern Gulf of Mexico coastline.

Upon arriving at the reserve, we stopped at the headquarters to inquire about maps or information. The most striking bit of information that I found was a dry-erase board on the wall at the desk. It listed “sightings.” There was quite a list, including multiple eagle sightings, white ibis, deer, wild turkey and even manatee seen back in May! I immediately had to get my bird book out to find out what Ibis look like! (If you don’t know what an Ibis is, you should look it up; it’s quite the “looker”).
