You can't trek through Rocky Mountain National Park without seeing a Mountainsmith backpack or lumbar pack on hikers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers. The Golden-based company that was founded in 1979 Patrick Smith, a former cross-country and backpacking guide who began making his own packs because he couldn't find one sufficient to carry all his equipment has built a reputation for its packs that is synonymous with quality.
"I designed my own gear, in part, because as a guide, I had to carry more stuff," Smith said. His first product, a cross-country sled to pull his gear, was so popular with his clients that he quit his job and started making products out of his garage. He soon built the company into a leading manufacturer of functional, high-end packs based on his needs while traversing the back country. Over the past 15 years, he has spent about 150 days a year in the field testing his company's equipment.
