Every year around this time I take a snowshoeing trip. Some years it’s a few days in a remote location, others it’s just a day trip – it was Trillium Lake and Snow Park this year. The thing that I love most about this tradition is that if allows me some time to ponder my place in this world. And it seems like an appropriate way to start a new year.

As I make my way in the vastness of nature I feel so small and unimportant, in a good way. There always seems to be such important things going on in life. Things that take our minds away from the simple enjoyments of life that it’s nice to be outdoors in the cold crisp air.

I look forward to winter, it’s a special kind of quite that fills the air.  You can hear the birds, the wind, the trickle of the streams and if your lucky the sound of snowflakes drifting down through the trees.
